Description
Rhododendron "Anton Chekhov" – evergreen shrub of medium growth type and compact form with an oval crown of medium density. The bush has inversely ovoid leaves of elliptical shape, medium length and width, dense, leathery, with weak gloss; pubescence on young leaves is absent or very weak. Leaves are colored in a saturated green color.
Flowering begins in early May and continues until the end of June, with the mass flowering period observed from early June to the middle of the month. Inflorescences are dome-shaped, large, containing from 12 to 14 pale violet flowers with a diameter of about 4.5 cm. Flowers have moderately purple-red spots on the throat and a white corolla with a delicate pink hue, decorated with dense burgundy speckling on the upper lobe.
The plant is resistant to diseases and pests, hardy down to -36 °C. Requires moderate care: watering with slightly acidified water to a depth of 20–30 cm, feeding with liquid organic matter or mineral fertilizers from early spring to late July, minimal pruning in early spring. Preferred soil – drained, loose, rich in humus, pH 4-5. "Anton Chekhov" is suitable for group and single plantings, hedges, compositions with coniferous plants, and landscaping of areas in partial shade or shade.
