Description
The 'Slay' rootstock is a first-generation hybrid developed by GREENOMICA LTD. It is specifically designed to enhance growth and yield in cucurbits, particularly watermelons and melons, especially medium-sized varieties with weak root systems.
Grafting onto the 'Slay' rootstock improves plant resistance to root rots by forming a robust vegetative mass. This results in larger average fruit size and more stable growth even under unfavorable conditions. The rootstock has high cold tolerance: it withstands temperature fluctuations and soil salinity, making it suitable for cultivation in regions with short, cool summers.
The grafting method is performed during the phase of the first true leaf opening. There are several methods for connecting rootstocks and scions – needle, side-by-side, tongue, or cleft. After grafting, plants are typically kept in greenhouses at temperatures of +24–25 °C and humidity of 95–96 %, then gradually acclimated to open conditions. Care includes comprehensive fertilization, regular watering during dry summers, and monitoring the development of rootstock shoots to prevent their dominance over the scion. Thanks to these measures, plants become resistant to root rots and fusarium, enabling harvest without the use of fungicides.
