Description
Viburnum opulus 'Sunset' – a perennial shrub reaching up to 3 meters in height and width. The plant is characterized by thick shoots, large glossy dark green leaves that turn a rich red color in autumn. The trunk is covered with brownish-grey wrinkled bark.
In spring, viburnum forms large clusters of fragrant white flowers, and by late May-June, flowering begins, lasting 2-3 weeks. After pollination, bright red berries of medium size (about 0.6 g) with a sweet-sour taste and slight astringency appear on the bush. The fruits reach full maturity in late August-early September and remain on the bush until spring.
'Sunset' is known for its high yield: over 5 kg of berries per bush, with maximum productivity observed by the 12th year of life. The plant tolerates cold well, has a well-developed root system, and is resistant to diseases. Berries are used both in cooking and in folk medicine; after processing with sugar or honey, the bitterness disappears. Viburnum prefers moist locations and a moderate climate, making it a popular choice for gardening.
