Taxonomic position and pathogen nature: The strawberry crimp nematode (Aphelenchoides fragariae) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, and order Aphelenchida. It is a microscopic plant-parasitic nematode that lives primarily as an endoparasite within plant tissues, feeding on cellular contents using a specialized feeding structure called a stylet.
Diseases and host crops: The primary disease caused by this pathogen is known as strawberry crimp or bud and leaf nematode disease. While strawberries are the most economically significant host, the parasite has a wide host range, infesting various ornamental plants such as begonias, chrysanthemums, African violets, as well as several species of ferns and certain vegetable crops.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the nematode includes the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The entire life cycle occurs within the aerial parts of the host plant.
