Bacillus avenae is a Gram-positive bacterium, classified as a phytopathogen that targets various cereal crops. As a member of the Bacillus genus, it has evolved mechanisms to colonize plant tissues, leading to specific bacterial infections that can significantly undermine plant health in both agricultural and experimental settings.

The primary diseases caused by this pathogen manifest as bacterial spots and streaks on leaves, which gradually develop into necrosis. As the infection progresses, the bacterial load increases, disrupting water and nutrient transport systems, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and a reduction in the overall vigor of the host plant.

The biology of Bacillus avenae involves saprophytic survival on crop residues and in the soil, allowing it to persist between growing seasons.
