Clavibacter michiganensis is a significant phytopathogenic bacterium belonging to the kingdom Bacteria, phylum Actinomycetota, and genus Clavibacter. As a Gram-positive bacterium, it acts as a severe pathogen primarily affecting solanaceous crops. It is widely recognized as the causative agent of bacterial canker in tomatoes, posing a major threat to greenhouse and field production globally.
The primary symptom caused by this pathogen is bacterial canker, which affects the vascular system of the host plant. Infected plants show symptoms such as wilting of leaflets, leaf chlorosis, internal stem necrosis, and the characteristic bird’s-eye spots on fruits. In advanced stages, the plant's vascular tissue turns brown, leading to total wilting and death.
The biology of Clavibacter michiganensis involves systemic colonization of the xylem vessels. Upon entering the plant through wounds or natural openings, the bacteria multiply rapidly, producing exopolysaccharides and enzymes that degrade cell walls. This mechanical blockage and chemical interference disrupt the transpiration stream, causing the characteristic wilting symptoms observed in the field.
Environmental conditions conducive to the development and spread of this pathogen include temperatures between 24°C and 28°C and high humidity levels. The bacterium is highly persistent, capable of surviving in infected seeds, soil, and plant debris. It spreads primarily via contaminated seeds, infected transplants, agricultural tools, and splashing water during irrigation or rainfall.
The economic impact of this pathogen is severe, often resulting in significant yield losses and total crop failure in highly susceptible areas. Control measures must be integrated: using disease-free certified seeds, practicing crop rotation, sanitizing agricultural tools and structures, and removing and destroying symptomatic plants to minimize the spread of the inoculum.
