Clavibacter xyli is a highly specialized plant pathogenic bacterium belonging to the kingdom Bacteria, family Microbacteriaceae, and genus Clavibacter. It is a gram-positive, coryneform bacterium that specifically colonizes the xylem vessels of its host plants, causing systemic vascular infections that are difficult to manage with conventional systemic bactericides.
The primary host for this pathogen is sugarcane. Clavibacter xyli is the causal agent of ratoon stunting disease (RSD), which is one of the most economically significant bacterial diseases in sugarcane production worldwide. By obstructing the vascular system, the pathogen interferes with water and nutrient transport, resulting in severe stunted growth and loss of vigor.
The life cycle of this pathogen is strictly tied to the vegetative propagation of the host plant. The bacterium is primarily spread through infected cane sets and during mechanical harvesting or pruning operations. It does not possess a complex survival stage in the soil but persists in root residues and can survive in dormant cane tissues throughout the cropping cycle.
Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of the bacterium include warm temperatures and high humidity, which facilitate the colonization of the xylem vessels. The spread is heavily dependent on management practices; contaminated blades and planting equipment are the most frequent vectors for introducing the pathogen into healthy fields or new plantations.
The economic impact of Clavibacter xyli is significant, often resulting in drastic reductions in stalk length, diameter, and overall sugar yield. Because symptoms are often latent or resemble environmental stress, detection is difficult. Therefore, disease control relies exclusively on strict hygiene, such as heat-treating planting material and disinfecting all cutting tools to prevent transmission.
