Description

The genus Dickeya belongs to the family Pectobacteriaceae. These are gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria known for their intense pectolytic enzyme production. As aggressive phytopathogens, they have gained significant attention globally due to their capacity to cause rapid tissue degradation in a wide variety of plant species.

These bacteria are primary causal agents of soft rot and blackleg in various economically important crops. Potatoes, onions, carrots, and ornamental plants are highly susceptible. The symptoms include water-soaked lesions that quickly turn into mushy, foul-smelling rot, eventually leading to the total collapse of the plant structure.

The biology of Dickeya is defined by its ability to spread rapidly through contaminated seed stocks, irrigation water, and infected aerosols during harvesting or handling. Once established in a host, the bacteria secrete enzymes that degrade the pectin holding cells together, facilitating colonization of the plant's vascular and parenchymal tissues.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of Dickeya outbreaks. High humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C are ideal for bacterial multiplication. In storage conditions, poor ventilation and high moisture content can turn a localized infection into a total loss of the stored vegetable harvest within a short period.

Effective management strategies center on strict phytosanitary practices. Key measures include the use of disease-free certified seeds, cleaning machinery between fields to prevent cross-contamination, and managing soil moisture levels. Since there are currently no effective curative chemical treatments, integrated pest management focused on prevention remains the standard approach.
