Pectobacterium is a genus of Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacteria within the family Pectobacteriaceae. These bacteria are significant phytopathogens known for causing severe soft rot diseases in a wide range of economically important crops. Their pathogenicity relies on the secretion of plant cell wall-degrading enzymes, primarily pectinases, which macerate plant tissues.

Common diseases associated with this pathogen include bacterial soft rot of tubers, roots, bulbs, and stems. Key affected crops include potatoes, carrots, onions, crucifers, and various ornamental plants. The symptoms are characterized by the rapid collapse of cellular structure, resulting in a watery, mushy decay often accompanied by an unpleasant odor due to secondary microbial colonization.

The biology of the pathogen involves survival in soil, plant debris, and infected propagation material such as tubers or bulbs. Bacteria enter the host plant through wounds caused by mechanical damage, harvesting procedures, or insect feeding. Once inside, they exploit the nutrient-rich apoplastic environment, rapidly multiplying and spreading by secreting enzymes that dissolve the middle lamella of plant cells.

Environmental conditions are critical for disease development. Pectobacterium thrives in environments with high humidity and moderate temperatures, typically between 20°C and 30°C. Poor soil drainage or stagnant water creates anaerobic conditions that favor the proliferation of these bacteria. During storage, poor ventilation and high humidity are the primary drivers for the rapid spread of the rot throughout the stored volume.

Control of Pectobacterium infections requires an integrated management approach, as chemical treatments are often ineffective once the infection is established. Preventive strategies are paramount and include:

  • Selection of certified disease-free planting material.
  • Implementation of long crop rotations to reduce soil-borne inoculum.
  • Sanitation of agricultural tools, storage facilities, and containers to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Minimization of physical damage during harvesting and handling.
  • Maintenance of proper airflow and temperature control in storage environments.
