Phytophthora citricola is a destructive oomycete belonging to the kingdom Chromista, genus Phytophthora. It is a highly significant plant pathogen known for its ability to cause diverse symptoms across a broad host range, including citrus, avocados, walnuts, and ornamental shrubs like rhododendrons. It acts as a soil-borne pathogen that primarily targets the vascular system and roots of its hosts.

The disease is most commonly recognized by the development of crown and root rot, trunk cankers that may exude sap, and general tree decline characterized by yellowing leaves and canopy dieback. In fruit-bearing species, it can also cause brown rot of fruits that touch the soil or are splashed by contaminated water during rainfall, leading to significant yield losses in orchards.

The lifecycle of the pathogen involves the survival of oospores in the soil or decaying plant debris. When environmental conditions are favorable, specifically when moisture levels are high, the fungus produces sporangia that release motile zoospores. These spores are attracted to root exudates and use flagella to swim through the soil water film, finding entry points in roots, crowns, or fruit surfaces.

Environmental factors are critical for the spread of this pathogen. Poorly drained soils, heavy clay textures, and high soil temperatures are ideal conditions for the pathogen to thrive. Furthermore, mechanical injury to the bark or roots provides easy access for the fungus to penetrate the host tissues, accelerating the onset of infection and making disease management significantly harder.

Effective management strategies for Phytophthora citricola involve integrated pest management practices. These include avoiding waterlogging by improving field drainage, selecting site-specific resistant rootstocks, and maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization. Chemical control, such as applying systemic phosphonate-based fungicides, is often required in high-risk areas to protect sensitive crops and stop the spread of infection.
