Phytophthora pseudolactucae is a specialized plant pathogenic oomycete belonging to the kingdom Chromista, within the genus Phytophthora. This organism is primarily recognized for its pathogenicity on lettuce species (Lactuca sativa), causing significant damage to root systems and affecting overall plant vigor.

The disease triggered by this pathogen is characterized by root and crown rot. Symptoms often include stunted growth, chlorosis, and sudden wilting of the leaves, especially under stress conditions. In advanced stages, the root system undergoes necrotic decay, which severely compromises the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients.

The life cycle of Phytophthora pseudolactucae is heavily dependent on moisture. It produces motile zoospores that navigate through saturated soil water to reach host roots. Upon attachment, the pathogen infects the epidermal cells, initiating colonization of the plant tissues. The production of resistant oospores allows the pathogen to persist in the soil for several years.

Because the pathogen relies on water films for mobility, poor irrigation management, such as excessive overhead watering or inadequate soil drainage, significantly increases the risk of disease spread within a field or greenhouse facility.
