Phytophthora syringae is a destructive oomycete pathogen belonging to the kingdom Stramenopila. Often confused with fungi, it is biologically classified within the group of water molds. This pathogen is notorious for causing various diseases in woody ornamentals and pome fruits, including apple and pear trees, as well as lilac bushes.
The primary symptoms associated with this pathogen include bark cankers, collar rot, and fruit rot. When affecting fruit, it typically causes a firm, brown rot that can progress rapidly during storage. On woody parts, it causes necrotic lesions on the bark, which can lead to the wilting and eventual death of young shoots or even the entire tree if the root collar is girdled.
The biology of Phytophthora syringae is distinct due to its preference for cool and moist environmental conditions. Its life cycle involves the production of motile zoospores that require free water for dispersal, and resistant oospores that allow the pathogen to survive for extended periods in the soil or decaying organic matter.
Epidemiological development is heavily dependent on moisture. Outbreaks are most common during rainy autumn seasons, where splashing rain facilitates the transfer of the pathogen from the soil reservoir to the lower canopy. Poor soil drainage and high humidity around the base of the plant significantly increase the risk of successful infection.
Integrated management is essential for controlling this pathogen. Key strategies include enhancing site drainage to avoid waterlogged conditions, pruning low-hanging branches to create a physical barrier between the fruit and the soil, and applying preventive fungicide treatments, particularly during seasons with high precipitation, to protect vulnerable tissue.
