This organism acts as a destructive parasite, primarily targeting the root systems of various plant species.

The pathogen is known for causing root rot, crown rot, and damping-off disease. It affects a wide range of hosts, including woody nursery stock, ornamental plants, fruit trees, and viticulture. The infection usually begins in the fine roots and can progress to the crown, resulting in systemic damage that compromises the plant's structural integrity and overall health.

The development of Phytopythium vexans is heavily dependent on moisture. It produces motile zoospores that navigate through soil water films to reach root exudates. Optimal conditions for infection involve saturated soils and moderate temperatures. The pathogen survives during unfavorable periods as thick-walled oospores, which allow it to persist in the soil for extended durations even in the absence of a host.
