It belongs to the domain Bacteria and the phylum Proteobacteria. As a plant pathogen, it is responsible for significant bacterial diseases in various agricultural crops.

Diseases and host crops: The primary host for this pathogen is maize (corn), where it causes severe bacterial leaf spot and bacterial stalk rot. Beyond corn, this bacterium has a relatively broad host range within the Poaceae family, including various grasses, millet, and oats, which helps it persist in the environment and survive across seasons.

Biology and life cycle: The bacterium survives in infected plant debris, soil, or within contaminated seeds. Initial infection occurs through stomata or wounds caused by wind, hail, or agricultural machinery. Once inside the tissue, the bacteria multiply rapidly in the intercellular spaces, secreting enzymes that lead to cellular breakdown and necrosis.

Development conditions and impact: High humidity, heavy rainfall, and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C favor rapid spread and disease development.
