This organism is recognized as a broad-host-range pathogen capable of infecting a wide variety of economically important agricultural crops.
This pathogen is responsible for various plant diseases, including necrotic leaf spots, bacterial blight, and soft rots on stems and fruits. Major host plants include crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, cabbage, potatoes, and several stone fruit trees, including peaches and cherries, where it can cause significant tissue necrosis.
The biology and lifecycle of this pathogen are closely tied to environmental conditions. Bacteria overwinter in infected plant debris, soil, or seeds. Transmission is primarily facilitated by splashing rain, irrigation water, agricultural tools, and various insect vectors that transfer the bacteria to healthy plant tissues.
Optimal conditions for disease progression involve high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. In these conditions, the bacteria proliferate rapidly and invade plant tissues through natural openings, such as stomata, or via wounds caused by mechanical damage or pests.
