Description
Pseudoperonospora humuli is an oomycete pathogen classified within the family Peronosporaceae. It is a highly specialized parasite that exclusively infects the hop plant (Humulus lupulus). As the causal agent of downy mildew, this pathogen represents a significant economic threat to the global brewing industry by reducing both the yield and the quality of hop cones.
The disease symptoms vary depending on the plant stage. Basal spikes, which are stunted and brittle shoots, appear early in the spring. As the season progresses, foliar symptoms manifest as angular, chlorotic to necrotic lesions constrained by leaf veins. Under humid conditions, a dark-colored sporulation layer develops on the underside of the foliage.
The life cycle of P. humuli involves both asexual and sexual reproduction. Asexual zoosporangia are wind- and rain-dispersed, facilitating rapid spread during the growing season. Sexual oospores are produced in infected plant tissues, allowing the pathogen to overwinter in soil or dormant hop crowns, serving as the primary inoculum for the next spring season.
Environmental conditions characterized by cool, wet weather are ideal for the development of downy mildew. The pathogen thrives when temperatures range between 15°C and 20°C and leaf wetness persists for several hours. High-density planting and poor canopy ventilation within the hop yard create microclimates that significantly exacerbate disease progression.
Control strategies emphasize a multi-faceted approach:
- Selection of resistant or tolerant cultivars.
- Effective pruning of early-season infected basal spikes.
- Implementation of proper canopy management to ensure air circulation.
- Application of protective fungicides during vulnerable growth stages.
- Sanitation protocols to remove overwintering inoculum from the field.
