Pythium catenulatum is a soil-borne phytopathogen belonging to the kingdom Stramenopila and the phylum Oomycota. Despite their superficial resemblance to true fungi, these organisms are unique in their biological characteristics, particularly their reliance on water-borne motile spores for dissemination.
This pathogen is primarily known for causing root rot and damping-off disease in a wide range of vegetable and horticultural crops. It frequently targets the root systems of greenhouse plants, including cucumbers, tomatoes, and various ornamental species, compromising the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients.
The life cycle involves the production of biflagellated zoospores. These spores are released into the soil water or hydroponic solution and are attracted to chemotactic signals from plant roots. Once they reach the root surface, they encyst and penetrate the host tissue, leading to tissue degradation and necrosis.
Environmental conditions such as high soil moisture, poor drainage, and moderate temperatures are critical for the rapid spread of Pythium catenulatum. The survival of the pathogen is ensured by the formation of oospores, which can remain dormant in the soil or substrate for extended periods until favorable host conditions return.
Effective control requires an integrated management strategy.
