Ralstonia solanacearum is a highly destructive soil-borne bacterium belonging to the kingdom Bacteria, phylum Proteobacteria. It is recognized as one of the most significant plant pathogens globally due to its vast host range, which includes over 200 plant species. The pathogen is primarily responsible for causing bacterial wilt and brown rot in essential economic crops like potatoes, tomatoes, tobacco, and bananas.
The bacterium colonizes the xylem of the plant, where it multiplies rapidly and produces copious amounts of extracellular polysaccharides. This bacterial mass acts as a physical barrier, obstructing the movement of water and nutrients within the vascular system. Consequently, the host plant exhibits symptoms such as rapid wilting, chlorosis, and stunted growth, which often culminate in total collapse and death.
The lifecycle of Ralstonia solanacearum is heavily influenced by environmental factors. The pathogen thrives in warm, humid conditions, typically with soil temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C. It can survive for extended periods in deep soil layers, within infected plant debris, or in infested water sources. Infection is most commonly initiated when the bacteria enter through root wounds caused by nematodes, mechanical damage, or natural rooting processes.
The agricultural damage caused by this pathogen is immense, leading to substantial yield losses in both open-field and greenhouse production systems. Infected potato tubers often develop characteristic brown discolorations in the vascular ring, making them unsuitable for trade or consumption. Because the bacteria can remain dormant in asymptomatic plants or tubers, the threat of international spread through contaminated germplasm is a critical concern for phytosanitary regulators.
