It is a known phytopathogen responsible for causing bacterial diseases in various cereal crops, most notably wheat. Its presence is characterized by the formation of galls that replace the healthy kernels, leading to significant physiological and economic damage to cereal production.

The host range of Rathayibacter iranicus is primarily restricted to members of the Poaceae family. The disease symptoms are often identified by the presence of yellow, slimy exudate on the floral structures, which hardens into dark-colored galls. Inside these structures, the bacterial population remains in a dormant state, protected from environmental stress until conditions become favorable for colonization again.

The biological cycle of the pathogen is uniquely linked to seed gall nematodes (Anguina spp.). The nematodes serve as essential vectors, carrying the bacterial cells on their bodies or within their digestive tracts. When the nematode infects the wheat plant, it simultaneously introduces the bacteria, facilitating the colonization of the host's vascular tissues and floral parts.

Environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures during the heading stage of cereals, are critical for the spread of the disease. The bacterium relies on moisture to disperse from the germinating galls to the surface of the plant, where it can enter through natural openings or via the wounds created by the feeding nematodes.

The economic impact of this pathogen is significant due to both yield losses and strict phytosanitary regulations. Because Rathayibacter iranicus is a quarantine organism in many regions, detection of the pathogen in a field can lead to severe trade restrictions, embargoes on grain exports, and the requirement for long-term eradication programs.
