Rathayibacter tritici is a gram-positive bacterium belonging to the Microbacteriaceae family. It is the causative agent of "yellow slime" or bacterial blight of wheat, a disease that causes significant concern globally. As a phytopathogen, it is classified as a quarantine pest in many jurisdictions due to its potential to devastate wheat production and its ability to persist in the environment for several years.

The primary host for this pathogen is wheat (Triticum spp.). Infected plants typically exhibit yellowing and distortion of the stems and spikes. The most diagnostic symptom is the appearance of yellow, sticky bacterial slime on the heads, which eventually hardens into dried galls. These galls replace the healthy grains within the wheat spike, rendering the crop commercially unusable.

The biology of Rathayibacter tritici is fundamentally dependent on the wheat seed gall nematode, Anguina tritici. The nematode larvae act as the vector for the bacterium. While the nematodes feed on the wheat plant, the bacteria adhere to their surface and are transported to the growing point of the plant. Once they enter the tissue, the bacteria proliferate, inducing the formation of galls that facilitate their survival and dispersal.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and moderate temperatures during the wheat heading stage significantly favor the spread of the disease. The bacteria can survive in soil, crop residues, or stored seeds as dormant galls for up to three years or more. Because the bacteria are protected within these nematode-induced galls, they are resistant to many external environmental stresses, making eradication difficult.

Economic damage is severe, leading to substantial yield losses and degradation of grain quality. Control strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle by removing the vector and the source of infection. Key measures include using certified, nematode-free seeds, implementing strict crop rotation protocols for at least three years, and destroying crop residues through plowing. Regular monitoring of fields for symptom expression is critical for early detection and prevention of further outbreaks.
