Rhododendron necrotic ringspot virus is a significant plant pathogen that causes systemic damage to various species of the Rhododendron genus. The primary clinical manifestations of the infection include distinct chlorotic ring patterns on the leaves, which eventually develop into necrotic, brown-colored spots. These lesions often coalesce, leading to leaf distortion, leaf drop, and an overall stunted growth habit that persists throughout the growing season.
The biology and transmission cycle of this virus primarily involve vectors such as soil-borne nematodes or sap-sucking insects. Additionally, the pathogen can be mechanically transmitted through contaminated pruning shears or other equipment used during regular maintenance if proper sanitation protocols are not observed between plants.
