Streptomyces ipomoeae

Streptomyces ipomoeae

Description

Streptomyces ipomoeae is a soil-borne actinobacterium that serves as a specialized plant pathogen. It is best known as the causal agent of "soil rot" or "pox disease," a severe and economically devastating infection that primarily affects sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) crops across various geographical regions.

The disease manifests as sunken, dark-colored lesions on the roots and underground stems of the sweet potato plant. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand, leading to the malformation and cracking of storage roots, which significantly reduces yield quality and marketability. Severely infected plants typically exhibit chlorosis, stunted growth, and may eventually collapse due to the destruction of the root system.

The biology of Streptomyces ipomoeae is defined by its ability to persist in the soil environment for extended periods as saprophytes or in a dormant state. The pathogen primarily spreads through contaminated soil movement, infected seed roots or transplants, and contaminated irrigation water. Because it is a soil-borne agent, once a field becomes infested, the bacteria can remain present for years, making long-term management critical.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the disease cycle. Streptomyces ipomoeae thrives in neutral to alkaline soils (pH above 5.2–5.5) and is particularly active when soil moisture levels are relatively low to moderate. High temperatures, ranging from 20°C to 30°C, provide an ideal climate for bacterial growth and infection. Conversely, soil acidification is one of the most effective ways to suppress its prevalence.

Effective management and control strategies focus on minimizing bacterial activity and preventing spread:

  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to break the infection cycle.
  • Managing soil pH by acidification (keeping pH below 5.0) to inhibit bacterial growth.
  • Ensuring the use of clean, certified, disease-free planting material.
  • Sanitizing farm equipment and tools to prevent moving infested soil between fields.
  • Selecting sweet potato cultivars that demonstrate resistance or tolerance to soil rot.
