Description

Xanthomonas cucurbitae is a gram-negative phytopathogenic bacterium belonging to the genus Xanthomonas. It is the primary causal agent of bacterial leaf spot and fruit rot on various cucurbit species. This pathogen is considered a significant threat in both field-grown and greenhouse vegetable production, particularly in warm and humid climates.

The disease affects a wide range of host plants including pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, and melons. Symptoms appear as small, water-soaked, angular spots on leaves that later become necrotic and dark brown. On the fruit, the bacteria cause the development of small, circular, sunken lesions with greasy margins, which can deepen and provide entry points for secondary pathogens leading to soft rot.

The biology of Xanthomonas cucurbitae centers on its ability to overwinter in contaminated seeds, plant debris, or soil. During the growing season, bacteria are disseminated by rain splashes, irrigation water, wind, and agricultural machinery. Entry into the plant occurs through natural openings like stomata or via wounds caused by insects or cultural practices.

Optimal conditions for pathogen development and disease spread include high temperatures (25–30°C) and high relative humidity. Under these conditions, the bacteria multiply rapidly within the leaf tissue, leading to the formation of visible bacterial ooze, which serves as inoculum for secondary infections. Greenhouse environments with poor ventilation are particularly conducive to severe outbreaks.

The economic impact of this pathogen is severe, as it reduces both the yield and the aesthetic/market quality of the harvested fruits. Once the fruit is infected, it loses its marketability and storage potential. Integrated management strategies are essential for control:

  • Using certified, pathogen-free, and treated seed.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation schedules (3+ years).
  • Removing and destroying infected plant debris post-harvest.
  • Applying copper-based bactericides during the early stages of disease development.
  • Using drip irrigation to keep foliage dry and minimize pathogen spread.
