Systematic position and pathogen type: Xanthomonas juglandis is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen belonging to the Xanthomonas genus. It acts as a primary plant parasite that colonizes the vascular and parenchymal tissues of walnut trees. As a specialized phytopathogen, it is responsible for the widespread disease known as walnut blight, which causes severe economic losses in nut production worldwide.
Diseases and host plants: The bacterium primarily affects the English walnut (Juglans regia). It attacks young leaves, succulent shoots, catkins, and fruit. On the fruit, the pathogen causes characteristic black, water-soaked spots that eventually turn into deep, sunken necrotic lesions, often causing the nuts to drop prematurely or rendering the kernel completely inedible.
Biology and life cycle: The pathogen overwinters primarily in infected dormant buds and in cankers on the branches. In the spring, with the arrival of warm, rainy weather, the bacteria multiply and are disseminated by splashing rain, wind, and insects. The pollen acts as a vector, transporting the bacteria to the pistillate flowers, where primary infection occurs during the blossom period.
Environmental conditions and impact: Disease severity is strongly correlated with high humidity and rain during the fruit-set stage. Optimal growth conditions for the bacteria occur at temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. The economic impact is significant; heavy infections can destroy a major portion of the crop, and prolonged exposure can weaken the tree, reducing its overall lifespan and productivity.
Protection and control measures: Effective management of walnut blight requires an integrated approach to reduce bacterial inoculum levels:
- Sanitary practices: pruning and destroying infected twigs and removing infested plant debris from the orchard floor.
- Chemical control: applying copper-based bactericides at critical stages, such as early leaf emergence and peak bloom.
- Orchard management: planting resistant walnut cultivars and ensuring proper pruning to improve airflow and drying of the canopy.
- Balanced fertilization: avoiding excessive nitrogen application, which promotes overly succulent, susceptible tissue growth.
