Xanthomonas perforans is a Gram-negative bacterial species within the genus Xanthomonas, family Xanthomonadaceae. It is a highly specialized plant pathogen known as the primary agent of bacterial spot disease in solanaceous crops. The bacterium is of significant economic concern, particularly in the production of tomatoes and sweet peppers in temperate and tropical climates.

The infection begins with small, water-soaked lesions on the foliage, which rapidly progress into dark, necrotic spots surrounded by a yellow chlorotic halo. As the disease advances, these spots may merge, leading to tissue death, leaf drop, and defoliation. On fruit, the pathogen causes distinct, raised scabs that decrease the quality and market value of the produce significantly.

The life cycle of Xanthomonas perforans is largely dependent on inoculum survival in contaminated seeds, crop debris, and alternative weed hosts. The pathogen enters the plant host through natural openings like stomata or through hydathodes and wounds caused by insects or mechanical handling. Dissemination of the bacteria occurs primarily through wind-driven rain and irrigation splashing.

Epidemiological development is highly favored by warm, humid environmental conditions. Optimal temperatures for disease progression fall between +25°C and +30°C, combined with high humidity levels. In intensive production systems like greenhouses, improper ventilation and overcrowding create an ideal environment for the pathogen to spread rapidly throughout the entire crop.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this pathogen, as chemical treatments have limited efficacy once systemic infection occurs:

  • Sourcing certified, pathogen-free seeds for planting.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation protocols to prevent soil-borne inoculum buildup.
  • Using copper-based bactericides preventively to protect foliage.
  • Rigorous sanitation practices, including removing infected plant material and disinfecting tools.
  • Controlling insect populations to reduce the number of entry points for the bacteria.
