Description
Xanthomonas vesicatoria is a Gram-negative bacterial plant pathogen belonging to the genus Xanthomonas. It is widely recognized as the causal agent of bacterial spot, a destructive disease affecting Solanaceous crops, primarily tomatoes and peppers, causing significant losses in commercial agriculture worldwide.
The disease manifests as small, water-soaked lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. As the pathogen advances, these spots turn dark brown or black, often surrounded by a characteristic yellow halo. In advanced stages, severe defoliation occurs, and the fruit surface becomes pitted with scabby lesions, rendering the produce unmarketable and susceptible to secondary rotting.
Regarding its biology, the bacterium is seed-borne and survives in crop debris. It can also persist in weed hosts belonging to the Solanaceae family. During the growing season, the pathogen is disseminated by splashing water from rain or overhead irrigation, as well as by wind-driven rain and contact with contaminated equipment, tools, or workers during field operations.
The development of X. vesicatoria is highly favored by warm, humid environmental conditions. Temperatures between 24°C and 30°C combined with frequent leaf wetness provide an ideal environment for the bacteria to penetrate stomata or wounds in the plant tissue, leading to rapid disease progression within the crop canopy.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control:
- Sourcing certified, disease-free seed and transplant stock.
- Implementing a minimum three-year crop rotation with non-host plants.
- Managing weeds that may act as reservoirs for the pathogen.
- Using drip irrigation to keep foliage dry and reduce bacterial spread.
- Applying copper-based bactericides preventatively during high-risk periods.
