The pine false webworm (Acantholyda erythrocephala) is a member of the Hymenoptera order, specifically the Pamphiliidae family. It is a well-known pest that primarily targets various species of pine, causing significant concern in both silviculture and ornamental gardening across its range.

The biological cycle consists of a single generation per year. Adult wasps emerge in late spring to mate and lay eggs on pine needles. The larvae are distinguished by their behavior: they spin silk webs around needles to create protective shelters where they feed, which makes them less accessible to contact insecticides and natural predators.

Damage occurs when larvae consume the needles, often causing significant defoliation of the current year's growth. Signs of an infestation include the presence of silk webs, browning needles, and the accumulation of frass within the webbing. Severely attacked trees exhibit reduced vigor, stunted growth, and a thinning canopy.

The economic impact of this pest is substantial during outbreaks, as trees weakened by heavy needle loss are prone to secondary attacks by bark beetles and other wood-boring insects. If left unchecked, persistent infestations can lead to the mortality of young pine plantations and degradation of mature stands.
