Achaea faber
Achaea faber
Description
Systematic position. Achaea faber belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. Formerly classified within the Noctuidae family, this moth is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Asia. Its taxonomic status is important for understanding its biological traits and developing specific management protocols for affected regions.
Affected crops. The pest is known for its preference for specific botanical families, most notably Malvaceae and Fabaceae. Major commercial crops susceptible to infestation include cacao, tea, cotton, and various fruit trees. Due to the rapid foliage consumption, Achaea faber can cause extensive economic damage by reducing the photosynthetic surface area of the plants, leading to significant yield losses if left uncontrolled.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Achaea faber consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. The eggs are typically deposited on the underside of leaves to provide protection for the emerging larvae. The caterpillar stage is the most destructive phase, characterized by aggressive feeding behavior. Pupation usually occurs in the soil or within folded leaves held together by silk webbing.
Nature of damage. The primary symptoms of infestation are skeletonized leaves or completely devoured leaf margins, leading to total defoliation of branches. Beyond the direct loss of green biomass, the feeding activity wounds the plant, creating entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria. This cumulative impact often results in stunted growth and a decline in the plant's overall health and vitality.
Protection measures. Effective control requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. Key components include:
- Monitoring adult populations with light traps or sex pheromone lures.
- Promoting natural enemies, including parasitoids and predators.
- Applying bio-insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval instars.
- Targeted chemical application during outbreak years to maintain population density below economic injury levels.
