Needle snails, belonging to the genus Acicula within the Aciculidae family, are minute terrestrial gastropods that often go unnoticed in horticultural settings. Characterized by their slender, elongated shells that resemble a needle, these mollusks thrive in specific micro-habitats. Their presence in agricultural land is often indicative of high moisture levels and a rich, organic-heavy soil structure.

Systematically, they are classified under the order Architaenioglossa. Their biology is centered around a cryptic lifestyle, living primarily in the soil profile or under dense leaf litter. They require a consistent calcium source to maintain their delicate shells, and their reproductive cycles are highly dependent on seasonal humidity and moisture availability in the soil, which protects them from desiccation.

These mollusks impact a variety of ornamental plants, vegetable crops, and nursery seedlings. They are particularly destructive in greenhouses where the environment remains consistently humid. By targeting the subterranean parts of plants, such as tender roots and emerging stems, they can compromise the structural integrity of the plant before the damage becomes visible on the foliage.

The damage caused by Acicula is typically characterized by small, invasive grazing marks on roots and collar regions. While they rarely consume large amounts of plant matter, the primary harm is the introduction of soil-borne pathogens into the wounds. These infections often lead to root rot and systemic decline, which frequently results in the sudden wilting of young crops during the growing season.
