Acidiella

Acidiella is a genus of fruit flies belonging to the family Tephritidae (order Diptera). In an agricultural context, species within this genus, particularly Acidiella consobrina, are known as specialized pests that target specific berry crops, causing severe economic damage to orchards and home gardens.

The primary host for this pest is honeysuckle (Lonicera). The larvae develop internally within the developing fruit, feeding on the pulp and seeds. This infestation leads to premature fruit drop, quality degradation, and significant yield reduction, often rendering the entire crop unmarketable if left untreated.

The life cycle of Acidiella is closely synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. The insect overwinters in the pupal stage within the soil beneath the host bushes. Adult flies emerge during the flowering or fruit-set period. Females puncture the young fruit to lay eggs, and the larvae emerge shortly after to begin feeding internally until the fruit is ripe.

Damage symptoms include premature coloration, deformation, and softening of the fruit. Growers often observe an early blue or dark tint on infested berries while they should still be green. Upon closer inspection, the larvae are found consuming the interior of the fruit, leaving behind excrement and decayed tissue that makes the berries completely inedible.

Management strategies focus on breaking the life cycle and protecting the crop:

• Regular collection and destruction of fallen fruit to stop larvae from pupating in the soil.
• Cultivation or tilling of the soil under bushes in late autumn to expose and kill overwintering pupae.
• Timed application of approved insecticides during the adult fly emergence period, adhering to strict pre-harvest intervals.
• Use of fine-mesh netting to physically exclude flies from the plants during the critical fruit-setting stage.
