Description

Acinopterus is a genus of leafhoppers belonging to the family Cicadellidae and the order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests, characterized by their piercing-sucking mouthparts which they use to extract nutrients from the phloem and xylem of various host plants.

This pest affects a wide range of crops, including various vegetables, ornamental plants, and forage grasses. The damage is particularly severe during the early growth stages of the plant, as heavy infestations can stunt development, reduce vigor, and potentially destroy seedlings, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.

The biology of Acinopterus involves a simple metamorphosis consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Adults are highly mobile and capable of flight, facilitating rapid spread across fields. Nymphs typically reside on the undersides of leaves, where they feed continuously, moving through several developmental stages before reaching adulthood.

Feeding damage by Acinopterus is twofold: direct injury from sap extraction, which causes leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and wilting, and indirect injury through the transmission of plant pathogens. As they feed, these insects can inject phytoplasmas or viruses into the plant, severely compromising crop health and final product quality.
