Description

Systematic position. Acontia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Noctuidae within the order Lepidoptera. In agricultural entomology, these insects are recognized as significant phytophages, capable of causing damage to a variety of commercial crops, especially in southern climatic zones.

Host plants and economic impact. These pests primarily target technical and vegetable crops, with cotton and soybeans being the most common hosts. The damage is caused by the larval stage, which feeds voraciously on leaves, leading to severe defoliation, stunted plant growth, and a substantial reduction in overall yield quality and quantity.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Adult moths are typically nocturnal. Females lay eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. After hatching, the larvae undergo several molts, feeding aggressively on plant tissue before reaching the pupal stage, which often occurs in the soil or within protective cocoons on host plants.

Damage patterns. Early-instar larvae skeletonize leaves, consuming the tissue between veins. As they develop, they can consume large portions of the leaf blade, leaving only the primary veins. In high-density populations, the larvae may also attack buds and flowers, significantly impairing the reproductive capacity of the host plant.

Management and control. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Acontia populations. Recommended strategies include:

  • implementing deep autumn tillage to destroy overwintering pupae in the soil;
  • maintaining weed-free fields to eliminate alternative host plants;
  • regular field monitoring and the use of pheromone traps;
  • application of biological insecticides or selective chemical pesticides when the economic injury level is reached.
