Systematic position. Acontia selenaria is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae, and subfamily Acontiinae. As a member of the diverse Noctuidae family, it shares typical nocturnal behavior for adults, while the larvae are recognized as significant folivorous pests that impact the health and yield of various host plants.
Host plants and damage. The pest demonstrates a strong preference for plants within the Malvaceae family. Its primary economic host is cotton, but it also frequently colonizes wild mallow (Malva spp.), hollyhock, and hibiscus. These weeds serve as initial reservoirs for the pest population before they spread into commercial agricultural fields.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females oviposit on the underside of leaves. Larvae, which are the damaging stage, feed voraciously until they reach maturity. Pupation typically occurs in the soil or among organic debris, allowing the insect to survive unfavorable conditions during winter months.
Nature of injury. The damage caused by Acontia selenaria larvae is characterized by extensive leaf consumption. Early-instar larvae scrape the leaf surface, while older larvae consume entire leaves, leaving only veins. This significant reduction in leaf area impairs the plant's ability to produce energy, often resulting in flower bud shedding and reduced fiber or seed yields.
Control measures. Management strategies should be integrated to be effective. Key approaches include cultural practices such as destroying Malvaceae weeds in and around fields and deep plowing after harvest to disrupt pupation sites. If infestation levels exceed economic thresholds, chemical intervention using selective insecticides is required, always strictly adhering to safety guidelines and IPM principles.
