Acrida lata

Acrida lata, commonly known as a type of slant-faced grasshopper, belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This insect is easily identified by its elongated body, conical head, and strong hind legs adapted for jumping. It is a specialized herbivore that thrives in grass-dominated ecosystems, often infiltrating agricultural land.

The distribution of Acrida lata is primarily concentrated in East Asian regions, where it frequently interacts with major food crops. Due to its physiological requirements, it prefers areas with high humidity and abundant vegetation, often colonizing irrigation canals, meadows, and grain fields, which serves as a foundation for its life cycle and reproductive success.

The damage caused by this insect includes intensive defoliation of cereal crops such as rice, wheat, and corn. Both nymphs and adults consume leaf tissue, often leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity in plants. In cases of high population density, the feeding activity can cause significant economic losses by stunting plant growth and reducing total biomass yield.

The life history of Acrida lata involves simple metamorphosis, consisting of eggs, nymphs, and adults. Eggs are typically laid in the soil in late summer and overwinter until spring. Upon hatching, the nymphs go through several instar stages, feeding aggressively on nearby vegetation before molting into the winged adult stage, which is capable of migration.
