Long-headed grasshopper
Acrida turrita
Description
The long-headed grasshopper (Acrida turrita) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is easily distinguished by its elongated body shape and characteristic cone-shaped head, which provides excellent camouflage among grass stalks. It is a common insect found in grasslands and agricultural landscapes, particularly in warm and arid regions.
This pest primarily attacks various cereal crops and grasses. Major host plants include wheat, maize, rice, millet, and sorghum. When populations reach high levels, they can cause significant economic damage to both young seedlings and mature plants, making them a concern for farmers operating in suitable ecological zones.
The life cycle of the long-headed grasshopper follows a simple metamorphosis, typically involving one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited in the soil in protective pods. Nymphs emerge in late spring or early summer and pass through five distinct larval stages before reaching adulthood. Temperature and soil moisture levels are critical factors regulating the success of development.
The damage caused by Acrida turrita is primarily mechanical, resulting from their strong mandibles. They feed on leaf blades, often leaving irregular notches or consuming large portions of the foliage. In severe infestations, defoliation can be extensive, negatively impacting the plant's photosynthetic capacity, reducing grain filling, and ultimately leading to decreased yield and poor crop quality.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural control methods, such as deep plowing and harrowing, are essential to destroy overwintering egg pods in the soil. During outbreaks, chemical control using targeted insecticides is applied according to established economic thresholds. Furthermore, keeping field margins clear of dense weeds helps reduce breeding sites and lowers the overall pest pressure on the farm.
