Systematic position: The long-headed locust (Acrida unguiculata) is classified within the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is easily recognizable by its elongated body and distinctively cone-shaped head, which allows it to blend perfectly into its environment, mimicking dry blades of grass and stalks of cereals.

Biology and life cycle: Like other grasshoppers, this species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. The eggs are deposited in the soil in protective pods. Upon hatching, the nymphs go through several instar stages, feeding aggressively as they grow. The entire cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature, with warmer seasons typically resulting in higher population density.

Affected crops and damage: The long-headed locust is a generalist feeder or polyphage. It commonly attacks cereals, corn, rice, sorghum, and various forage grasses. Both nymphs and adults consume leaf tissue, often causing ragged edges on leaves, which in severe infestations can lead to total defoliation of the crop canopy.
