Acroceratitis distincta is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae, order Diptera. This pest is recognized for its specialized feeding habits and its potential to cause substantial losses in fruit orchards. Due to its impact on fruit quality, it is a subject of ongoing entomological research and quarantine monitoring in several tropical and subtropical regions.

The primary host plants for this species are citrus fruits. The pest targets developing fruits, where females deposit eggs beneath the rind. The larvae hatch inside the fruit and tunnel through the pulp, feeding on the nutritious tissues. This activity renders the fruit unsuitable for human consumption, often forcing growers to discard entire portions of the harvest.

The biological cycle of this fly is strictly linked to the fruit development stages. After hatching, the larvae pass through three distinct instars inside the fruit. Once they reach maturity, they exit the fruit to pupate in the soil or in sheltered areas beneath the tree canopy. This subterranean pupation stage makes the pest particularly difficult to target once the larvae have left the fruit.

Damage assessment shows that infested fruits display small punctures on the surface, often surrounded by necrotic tissue or rotting areas caused by secondary pathogens that exploit the entry holes. The economic threshold is usually very low, as even a small infestation can trigger phytosanitary inspections and trade restrictions for commercial growers.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Control measures typically involve:

• Deploying pheromone-based traps to monitor population density and suppress adult mating.
• Sanitation protocols, including the regular removal and deep burial of fallen, infested fruit.
