Acroceratitis plumosa

Acroceratitis plumosa is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae and the order Diptera. This pest is a specialized phytophage that has evolved to develop inside the fruits of various tropical and subtropical plants, making it a significant concern for fruit growers in regions where its host plants are cultivated.

The host range of this insect includes various succulent fruits, particularly those within the Cucurbitaceae family and other tropical fruit crops. Larvae of the pest bore into the fruit, feeding on the internal tissues, which typically results in premature fruit drop, internal decay, and a total loss of commercial value for the affected produce.

The biology and lifecycle of this pest consist of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female deposits eggs beneath the skin of developing fruits using an ovipositor. The emerging larvae create tunnels inside the fruit pulp, consuming nutrients as they grow. Upon reaching maturity, the larvae exit the fruit and pupate in the soil beneath the host plant.

Damage symptoms include internal tunneling, premature ripening, and the appearance of necrotic spots on the fruit surface at the oviposition sites. The pest's damage is not limited to direct tissue consumption; it also introduces pathogens that facilitate secondary infections, leading to rapid rotting and total destruction of the infested fruit.

Control measures require a multi-faceted approach emphasizing sanitation and monitoring:
