Systematic position. Acrocercops chionosema belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. These moths are well-known leaf miners. The taxonomic classification identifies them as highly specialized insects adapted to feeding within the mesophyll layers of host plant leaves, which provides protection from many environmental factors and predators.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets various woody plants, particularly those within the Fabaceae family. It is often found on ornamental trees and specific legume crops. The host preference is driven by the nutritional value and structural suitability of the leaves for the larval development phase of the moth.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically oviposit on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately mine into the leaf tissue. As they grow, the mines expand in size and shape, often becoming blotch mines. After completing several larval instars, they pupate either within the leaf mine or by spinning a cocoon on the leaf surface or in the soil.

Damage and economic significance. The damage is characterized by mines that appear as discolored, thin patches on the leaf surface. As the larvae consume the parenchyma, the leaves lose their chlorophyll, leading to reduced photosynthesis. In severe infestations, premature leaf abscission occurs, causing stress to the plant, reducing its vigor, and significantly impacting the aesthetic value of ornamental plants.

Control measures. Managing Acrocercops chionosema requires an integrated approach due to the protected location of the larvae:

• Removing and destroying infested fallen leaves to eliminate pupae.
• Application of systemic insecticides that can penetrate the leaf tissue.
• Using pheromone traps for monitoring peak flight periods of adults.
