Green sharpshooter

The green sharpshooter (Acrogonia virescens) is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This leafhopper species is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly within tropical and subtropical climates where it impacts various perennial crop species.

The primary hosts of this pest include citrus trees and coffee plantations. By feeding on the xylem and phloem sap, the insect removes essential nutrients and moisture, which leads to general decline, reduced photosynthesis, and stunted growth of the affected host plants.

The life cycle of the green sharpshooter follows a hemimetabolous development process. Eggs are deposited within the plant tissues of young stems or leaves. After hatching, the nymphs remain on the host plant, feeding continuously until they reach the adult stage, at which point they become highly mobile and capable of spreading to adjacent plants.

Beyond the mechanical damage caused by feeding, the green sharpshooter is a known vector of plant pathogens. It is particularly dangerous because it can transmit phytoplasmas and other systemic pathogens that cause lethal or debilitating diseases, leading to significant economic losses in commercial fruit production.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling A. virescens. This includes the use of systemic insecticides, maintaining optimal plant health through nutrition, and active monitoring for early detection. Farmers are advised to maintain orchard hygiene to reduce shelter for the insects and prevent rapid population growth.
