Description

The Large Dagger Moth (Acronicta major) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. As a serious agricultural pest, it primarily targets various deciduous fruit trees, posing a threat to both commercial orchards and small-scale horticultural farms due to its voracious feeding habits.

The host range of this pest is quite broad, including commercially significant species such as apple, pear, and plum trees. While they favor orchard crops, they are also frequently found on wild woody plants, which allows the moth population to persist in the landscape even when orchard control measures are in place.

The life cycle of the moth typically follows a predictable seasonal pattern, consisting of eggs, larvae (caterpillars), pupae, and adults. The caterpillars are the destructive stage, characterized by their robust size and high rate of leaf consumption. The pupal stage occurs in concealed locations, such as under tree bark or in leaf litter, providing protection during overwintering.

Extensive feeding causes premature leaf drop, which reduces the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, thereby weakening the tree and directly impacting fruit quality and yield.
