Acrotylus longipes is a species of grasshopper belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. These insects are well-adapted to arid environments, characterized by their robust legs that facilitate powerful jumping movements. They are typically found in dry, sparsely vegetated areas, including rangelands and semi-desert agricultural zones.

The diet of this species includes a wide range of cultivated crops such as wheat, barley, maize, and sorghum. When natural food sources in wild areas become depleted due to drought, these grasshoppers often migrate into cultivated fields. Their feeding activity is most destructive during the nymphal and adult stages, where they can rapidly consume green tissue.

The life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are laid in the soil in clusters, which are highly resilient to environmental stressors. After hatching, nymphs undergo several molts, rapidly increasing in size and metabolic demands. The population density is heavily influenced by the previous year's rainfall and soil temperatures during the incubation period.

The damage caused by Acrotylus longipes manifests as significant leaf defoliation and the consumption of tender shoots. This reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, resulting in stunted growth and significant reductions in potential crop yield. In severe infestations, the insects can strip a field of vegetation entirely, especially during the early growth stages of the crops.
