The lettuce aphid, Acyrthosiphon scariolae, belongs to the family Aphididae within the order Hemiptera. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily colonizes plants of the Asteraceae family, with a significant economic impact on commercial lettuce cultivation across various climatic zones.

This aphid species is known to infest various types of cultivated lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and can also survive on wild lettuce species. The presence of these alternative hosts often makes it challenging to eradicate the pest completely from agricultural landscapes during the growing season.

The life cycle is characterized by rapid asexual reproduction (parthenogenesis). During the summer, winged morphs are produced, which facilitate the rapid spread of the population between fields.
