Systematic position: The genus Aepyceros (impalas) belongs to the family Bovidae, order Artiodactyla. In an agronomic context, they are categorized as large-bodied herbivorous pests that negatively impact agricultural production, particularly in regions where their natural habitat overlaps with cropland.

Crops affected: Impalas are opportunistic grazers and browsers, causing significant damage to various crops. They frequently target cereal crops, including maize and wheat, as well as vegetable plantations and young orchards. During dry seasons, they shift to browsing legumes and succulent forage crops, posing a threat to both food and fodder production.

Biology and lifecycle: Impalas are highly social, gregarious animals that move in large herds. Their mobility and ability to travel long distances allow them to exploit agricultural fields systematically. They possess keen sensory perceptions, enabling them to navigate complex landscapes and detect human intervention, which makes them persistent pests in high-intensity farming areas.

Beyond direct ingestion, herds cause severe trampling of young seedlings, leading to compaction of topsoil and structural damage to root systems. In high-density cases, they can cause total loss of specific field sections, leading to substantial financial deficits for the farmer.

Control measures: Managing impala populations requires a focus on exclusion and behavioral deterrence to minimize crop exposure:

• Application of chemical taste or scent repellents on perimeter crops.
