Southern hawker

Taxonomic classification. The Southern hawker (Aeshna cyanea) is a large dragonfly belonging to the order Odonata and the family Aeshnidae. In an agricultural and aquaculture context, while adults are generally considered beneficial predators, the larval stage (naiads) can cause significant management challenges in artificial ponds and aquatic plant production facilities.

Affected crops and habitats. The species primarily affects aquatic plants and nursery ponds. Larvae move through submerged root systems and foliage, including species like water lilies (Nymphaea) and pondweeds. This physical disturbance can damage delicate roots and interfere with the successful cultivation of commercial hydrophyte crops.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Aeshna cyanea is characterized by a prolonged aquatic stage. Eggs are laid in decaying vegetation or directly into the water. The naiads are voracious predators that undergo multiple molts over a period of two to three years, occupying different niches within the water column and consuming both plant-associated invertebrates and small fish fry.

Damage assessment. The primary harm is twofold: mechanical damage to aquatic crop tissues during larval foraging and predation on beneficial fauna. In intensive aquaculture, the presence of these large naiads can lead to reduced fry survival rates and stunted growth in nursery plants, which complicates the commercial production of aquatic vegetation for ornamental or ecological restoration purposes.

Control measures. Effective management of Aeshna cyanea in agricultural ponds involves several integrated approaches:

• Implementing regular pond drainage cycles to eliminate larval populations.
• Clearing excessive vegetation from the pond margins to remove habitats for oviposition.
• Installing mesh screens at water intake points to block adult access.
• Maintaining high biodiversity of natural predators to regulate larval density within the pond ecosystem.
