Small hive beetle

Systematic position: The small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae (sap beetles). Native to sub-Saharan Africa, it has become a major invasive pest in many parts of the world, posing a continuous threat to honey bee colony health and productivity.

Biology and life cycle: The beetle's life cycle is closely tied to the honey bee hive environment. Adult beetles are strong fliers and are attracted to the odors of honey bee colonies. Eggs are laid in clusters in crevices. The larval stage is the most damaging, as larvae burrow into combs, feeding on honey, pollen, and bee brood. After completion of the larval development, they drop to the ground to pupate in the soil.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary damage caused by Aethina tumida includes the destruction of wax combs and the fermentation of honey. As larvae tunnel through the combs, they contaminate the honey with yeast and feces, causing it to ferment and seep out of the cells. This mess often triggers the bees to abandon the hive, leading to colony collapse or desertion.

Economic significance: The economic impact on beekeeping is severe. Infestations result in the loss of hive products (honey, wax), equipment damage, and the labor-intensive costs of cleaning or disposing of contaminated materials. Furthermore, quarantine regulations in many countries restrict the movement of bees and hive products, impacting international trade and local apiculture.

Control measures: Management strategies focus on sanitation, biological control, and chemical intervention when necessary:

• Implement proactive hive monitoring using oil-based or baited traps inside the hive.
• Maintain strong, healthy bee colonies that are better equipped to protect their nests.
• Keep the apiary site clean, removing debris and vegetation that could provide shelter for pupating larvae.
• Extract honey quickly after removal from the hive to prevent larvae from hatching in storage.
• Use soil drench treatments or specific biological agents (like nematodes) in the soil around the apiary to kill pupae.
