Systematic position. Agalliana ensigera is a species of leafhopper belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This insect is recognized as a significant pest, particularly in regions where it finds suitable host plants among various agricultural and vegetable crops.

Host plants and damage potential. The pest primarily targets members of the Solanaceae family, including tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, as well as sugar beets. Its feeding habits are detrimental not only due to direct sap extraction, which weakens the plant, but also because these insects are known vectors of various plant viruses that cause severe physiological disorders.

Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Both nymphs and adults are typically found on the undersides of leaves, where they feed on phloem sap. The life cycle is temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations during the growing season. Adults overwinter in crop residues or nearby grasses, emerging to infest new crops in the spring.

Nature of damage. Infested plants exhibit characteristic chlorotic spots and speckling on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, leaves may become curled, brittle, and experience premature senescence. The resulting decline in photosynthetic capacity directly affects fruit development, leading to significantly lower yields and reduced product quality.

Control measures. Effective management of Agalliana ensigera relies on integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
