Description
Systematic position: The parsnip moth (Agonopterix applana) is a moth of the family Depressariidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that is widely distributed across temperate regions of Eurasia, often causing localized but severe damage to umbrella-shaped plant species.
Host plants: The species feeds exclusively on members of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family. Common commercial crops affected by this pest include carrots, parsnips, celery, parsley, and dill. Additionally, many wild plant species in this family serve as vital reservoirs for the pest population.
Biology and life cycle: Adult moths overwinter in sheltered locations, emerging in early spring to mate and lay eggs. The larvae hatch and begin feeding on the foliage of host plants. The life cycle consists of several larval instars, and they typically pupate within the folded, silk-webbed leaves of the host plant.
Damage and economic impact: Larvae damage plants by skeletonizing leaves and tying them together with silk to form protective shelters. As they develop, they move to the flowering umbels, where they feed on buds and seeds. This feeding behavior can completely destroy seed production in carrot and parsnip crops, representing a major economic threat.
Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial. This includes the removal of wild host plants from field margins and the use of physical barriers or netting for smaller garden plots.
