The pale western cutworm (Agrotis orthogonia) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is recognized as a serious agricultural pest, particularly in regions prone to dry springs, where its impact on cereal crop establishment can be catastrophic if not managed properly.
This species primarily attacks small grain crops, including wheat, barley, and oats. In agricultural landscapes, it is known for causing significant stand thinning, as the larvae feed on the stems of young plants, often leading to total loss of seedlings in infested areas of the field.
