Spiny cutworm

The spiny cutworm (Agrotis spinifera) is a significant polyphagous pest belonging to the family Noctuidae within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a serious threat to agriculture in various regions, capable of causing extensive damage to a wide range of economically important crops due to its adaptability to arid climates.

This pest affects diverse crops, including cereals, maize, cotton, potatoes, tomatoes, and various vegetables. The larvae, commonly known as cutworms, are the primary damaging stage, as they possess strong mandibles capable of severing young plants at the base, leading to rapid loss of crop stands.

The life cycle of Agrotis spinifera follows a complete metamorphosis involving four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Moths are nocturnal and typically lay eggs in the soil or on the lower surfaces of host plant leaves. Overwintering usually occurs in the larval or pupal stages, sheltered within the soil profile, providing protection against harsh environmental conditions.

The damage caused by the spiny cutworm is characterized by the sudden wilting and death of seedlings as the larvae feed on the roots and underground stems. Because the larvae remain buried in the soil during the day and feed at night, infestations are often unnoticed until significant damage, such as patchy fields or missing plant rows, becomes apparent.
